Adjustment of air fares delayed by currency revaluation
Australian air fares are unlikely to change until after mid year as the Australian dollar revaluation awaits parity with the US dollar and sterling. An airline spokesman noted that par between currencies cannot be set while sterling floats, with the US dollar treated as the Western standard. Analysts expect a fixed Merling-US rate to emerge around August or later, leaving passengers traveling from Australia to abroad paying about 7 percent more in US dollar terms. Travel agents criticize the delay, saying carriers benefit from currency stagnation while Australian travelers miss fare relief.
