The Prime Minister calls for total war patience and resolve as Britain braces for continued combat. He cites economic mobilization, air defense, U boat patrols, and dockside shipping while warning of Nazi oppression in Czechoslovakia and Poland with mass arrests, executions, and concentration camps.
Private detectives guard Unity Mitford in Oxford as Freeman is treated for two bullet wounds in the head with brain injury. Dr H W Cairns attends as Nuffield Pro Burgery at Oxford. condition described as serious.
Berlin reports a German communique stating the Navy continued successful warfare by sinking over 20000 tons of shipping on Thursday. It also says a U boat sank two British transports in a convoy off Oporto.
Censorship for the first time allows details of Britain’s recent frost crisis across the country including Cornwall where rivers were frozen and the Serpentine and many London park lakes were iced over.
Four fires threaten the Yass area with heavy devastation near Yana, spreading along the Hume Highway. Volunteers from across regions join the Yass Bush Fire Brigade in a desperate effort to protect homesteads and stock on estates including Belangaroo Glen Rock and Marilba while canberra witnesses the smoke.
A heat wave sparked widespread fires across New South Wales with dense smoke over much of the state. Volunteers were called from Sydney as blazes threatened Moss Vale Exeter and Bunganow with a five mile front burning and several towns narrowly saved. Temperatures reached 115 degrees at Goonwindl.
A drowning occurred at Cotter River Pool where the pool is narrow and shallow in places. Fourteen others were rescued as 11 children and two adults were pulled from the water. A woman feared for her child but the child escaped danger. the woman was treated after rescue. Experts say difficulties arose from bathers entering too soon after eating.
Mr. B. J. Stevens former NSW premier proposed industrial conscription drawing strong opposition from Labour and unions. Leaders warned the plan would erode trade unionism and hint at NSW and Commonwealth moves toward militarised controls and fascist style rule. Heffron Labour MLA condemned the broadcast against industrial freedom.
The German radio plan backs families by gradually releasing names. Last night 14 names were aired, including Sub-Lieutenant Geoffrey Wardle of Leck aged 22 from the submarine Starfish. His father, listening to every bulletin, hopes for news as the Starfish is reported lost. The Admiralty has published 50 officers and 173 ratings from the destroyer Exmouth.
The Moscow and Helsinki fronts report about 21 000 casualties in the Ladoga campaign with 5 000 dead and 16 000 wounded among Russians. Finns claim over 500 tanks destroyed, 100 captured, plus numerous machine guns. Neutral observers call the Russian attacks a defeat. Finland seeks more aircraft as a new call to colours hits the 1808 class, ordered to report by February.
Sir Earle Page returns to attack military camp conditions alleging 20 percent of goods at Ingleburn spoiled in hot weather and eight thousand pounds of meat spoiled at a Queensland camp. He cites high sickness rates and urges permanent medical staff. Eastern Command replies camps are better than in war with high health standards and refrigeration planned. The Prime Minister echoed this response.
A severe heat wave across northern New South Wales and Queensland has killed eighteen people and sent hundreds to hospitals for collapse. Victims include John Morland seven months and Mary Morland four, who died in Moree. plus George Shillito seventy three of North Bend, who died after collapsing. Five Moree children died over the weekend, Judith Burning eleven months and Aboriginal child Graham thirteen months. Poultry and birds also suffered heavy losses from the heat as authorities warn of more hot spells to come.
The report notes an increased bacon ration following stockpiling. It states many people declined to take up anything beyond the allowed ration.
Four candidates seek UAP endorsement for the Corio by election to be decided at a Geelong meeting. Named are J. T. Smith of Melbourne a former MLA H. Weddell former administrator of the Northern Territory H. C. Fallon barrister and solicitor of Geelong and C. Baird accountant.
RAF reconnaissance photos reveal a German aerodrome under construction at Langeong in the Frisian Islands. The site lies under 300 miles from the British coast and about 350 miles from London, according to the latest images.
On day six of the offensive north east of Lake Ladoga Finnish forces report repelling new Russian attacks. Casualties run high with hundreds dead and wounded on the ice as Finnish batteries enfilade and drive off attackers near Mattal. A Finnish communique confirms Russian reversals. An Italian is named to command the Sirat Battalion of the Finnish Foreign Legion amid a multinational force.
In Moscow on Sunday Pravda declares no angel will save the Finns. The article asserts soldiers who saw an apparition were drunken or misled by a British ploy to persuade neutrals God sides with opponents of the Soviet.
Bucharest government denied reports of a trade pact between Russia and Germany and stated Romania is only concerned with undertakings that do not involve such alliance.
A pilot named Robert John, a builder and designer, died when his plane crashed near the railway goods line after taking off from Coate Island aerodrome at Melbourne. The machine, an old monoplane, appeared recently acquired and was said to be in poor condition.
