Thousands displaced as WA bushfires devastate Dwellingup

In Western Australia three towns burned leaving hundreds homeless after a vast 10 mile firefront. Dwellingup suffered massive destruction including a timber mill, police station, church, hospital and many homes. residents describe the night as terror with 300 firefighters outside the town and 20 unaccounted people. Two young men Luka Sevely and Joseph Sevely, with John McCoy, broke through the blaze to aid survivors.

Kennedy Holds Top White House Disarmament Meeting

President Kennedy chaired a high level White House session with his diplomatic, defense, and scientific aides to discuss disarmament, the world’s key issue. He plans a State of the Union on the following day and a post Eisenhower budget package to Congress. He will also hold the first live televised presidential news conference.

Portuguese Join Hunt for Pirates

Six planes and destroyers of the United States Navy search the Caribbean southwest of Martinique for the liner Santa Maria seized by Portuguese rebels. British Dutch ships and planes join the hunt as 600 passengers are believed aboard with several injured. The ship, led by Henrique Galvao, was taken near Curacao and has not been sighted since crew members were ashore at Saint Lucia.

Congo faces possible full scale civil war as UN withdraws troops

Missing Garuda plane over Indonesian jungle found by search

State controlled Garuda Indonesian Airways plane with European passengers including Anthony Hayrock Hill left Djakarta at 9 a.m. yesterday for Bandoeng. Three air helicopters and troops search the jungle as the loss prompts ongoing recovery efforts.
