Sweet peas promise masses of blooms from careful growing

Sweet peas are a garden classic with a long history. If tended well they yield large, abundant blossoms on long stems, though crowded, neglected plants dull quality. From 1680 seeds reached England, and after the National Sweet Pea Society formed, varieties multiplied in color and form. Modern guidance stresses deep beds, good drainage, sunny sites, and sturdy supports. Seeds may be presoaked, sowing depths about an inch, spacing nine inches, with two seeds per hole. Exhibition practice uses wider spacing, pruning, and training through wire netting to lift giant blooms.
