Troops patrolled debris filled streets as gunfire and burning holdings lit the sky in Gwelo. Militants looted and set fire to property including a restaurant and church while authorities dispersed crowds with bayonets and a machine gun. Wellington reports Sir Keith Holyoake expressed extreme disappointment at France resuming tests in the Pacific. He warned New Zealand would be deeply concerned by what he called a disregard for the wishes of the people of the area.

The Lamut was escorted back without a shot, while the Kolyvan remained in custody. both vessels were heading to Adak, Alaska. The Lamut carried Vladimir Arlemov, commander of a Soviet fishing fleet, as US authorities seized ships amid a loading operation near Cape Upright.
