Five Presumed Drowned In Boat Fatality On Lake George

A Canberra alarm reported at 8.30 p m signaled a fatal boating accident on Lake George. Police from four districts and Royal Military College sailors searched the choppy waters through the night for five people including Fr L Reynolds and Mr Lynch. Despite two Army ducks and shore volunteers using searchlights, no sign of the boat or missing occupants was found by 2 a m. The inquiry noted a possible aerial search by the R A A F if sunrise failed to reveal progress.

Drownings Claim Four Lives Across Harden Bendigo

Four people drowned in separate incidents across Harden and Bendigo regions. Edgell, 28, of Murrumburrah, slipped from an inflated tube in eight feet of water near Harden station during a bath at a dam. Kevin Apps tried to help. John Brian Bartlett, 22, of Albury, vanished while swimming with brothers at Bowna pool. his body recovered in 12 feet of water about 50 yards from the bank. Sydney Smith, 63, of Stockton, drowned when a dinghy capsized at Lake Macquarie. other occupants were rescued after an hour in the water. In Eaglehawk, a nine-year-old boy Robert John Smith of Burnside Street drowned in the Eaglehawk baths after his brother reported the accident on returning home.

Fatal Highway Collision in Bear Goulburn

Sydney reported a fatal highway crash at the Hume and Federal Highways junction in Bear Goulburn. A panel van struck a semi-trailer, killing Mrs Whitelaw of Caringbah and injuring her husband Charles Whitelaw, who is in hospital for observation. The semi-trailer driver Michael Gagsiero of Enworthville was unhurt.

Four Killed On Victorian Roads

Melbourne reports four deaths on Victorian roads over the weekend. A three car crash at Wellington and Springvale Roads in Mulgrave left a 54 year old Norma May ersman of Oakdale Road Caulfield dead and five others hospitalized. A fatality at Calder Highway near Macedon killed George Johnson, 8, of Abbotsford when a car struck a tree.

Two R.A.A.F. Men In Air Crash Near Darwin

Two R.A.A.F. personnel escaped serious injury when a Tiger Moth crashed nose first into the ground at the R.A.A.F. quarry 45 miles from Darwin. Pilot Leslie Raymond Roberts, 23, of Caringbah Sydney, fractured spine without complications and facial lacerations. Lac Donald Karnatz, of Kergunyah via Wodonga, sustained facial lacerations and a left ankle injury.

Burgess Hints Return From Moscow to England

Guy Burgess, the former British diplomat who defected with Donald Maclean, reportedly wishes to return to England. Michael Ingrams, a TV commentator, said Burgess hopes to meet British visitors and asks if he would be accepted. Burgess works as a translator and lives comfortably while Maclean has cut ties, now speaking only Russian as he uses the name Fraser.

Big Cut in U K Arms Reported

London reports a cabinet approved a 100 million pound cut in Britain arms programme. The Sunday Express notes it is the largest single reduction in cold war defence budgets. Defence Minister Duncan Sandys led the slash including some nuclear savings while conventional forces bear the brunt. Soviet Aid to Yemen Discussed by Egyptian Talks

The Soviet Ambassador to Egypt Evgeny Kisselev left Cairo by air with 11 Soviet experts to Yemen for talks with Yemeni officials. The group will study extending Soviet aid to Yemen along the lines of aid given to Syria and Egypt, covering economy and industry sectors.
