British Overseas Airways Corporation halts Comet jet airliner services as investigators probe last night’s crash in which 35 people died. A BOAC spokesman cites a measure of prudence for a technical examination, with French carriers Air France and Union Aeromaritime des Transports also grounding their Comets “for a few days.” One identified victim is 23 year old air hostess Jean Ca, found in Porto Alegre. Aviation experts cite possible factors including structural or engine failure, fire, sabotage, or a jet stream encounter in high altitude clear skies.
A Colombian transport plane crashed near Mani Velén, Colombia, killing all 22 on board. The plane was en route from Medellín to Armenia, carrying cargo tied to the coffee trade, with poor visibility reported by the pilot before contact was lost. The wreckage was later found in rugged mountain terrain.
