Russians May Fire Rocket From Caspian

The Caspian Sea region near Iran is cited as a southern frontier area for Soviet missile tests. U S sources suggest a push to place a manned missile into orbit, while Moscow Radio says rockets will fall about 400 miles south of Johnston Island and 1 100 miles southeast of Honolulu Hawaii. The Defense Command plans a report to counter fears of a sudden ICBM strike, arguing multiple missiles would be needed for real destruction, despite the NYT stating large warheads offer limited power.

Missile Base on Malta Stir Controversy Reported

The Malta base is described as providing only maintenance for missiles fed at sea from the missile ship Girdleness. No firing is planned, says the spokesman, while Governor Sir Guy Grantham dismisses missile base rumors as preposterous. The Voice of Labour claimed missiles could be fired from the island in wartime, condemning the move as a violation of liberty by those who preach democracy. Radio activity levels down in Tennessee tests

A Tennessee physicist reported today that the 14 year leap in nuclear tests by the Soviet Union had been noted and that the amount of radioactive iodine in human thyroids fell compared with the pretest period. Dr. Lester Van Middlesworth said the Atomic Energy Commission arranged samples from four continents. He tested two to four thousand glands a year, noting the rate allowed detection of a nuclear test within two weeks and helped locate its origin.

Scientists of NSW High Schools Face Rapid Physics Advances

Professor Harry Messel opened a summer school of nuclear science at Sydney University as more than 120 science teachers from Australia and New Zealand attend. He warned that rapid progress in physics has left teachers baffled and said the university will teach physics only from the leaving certificate level in the future. He noted last year the school trained 800 students below that level and expected about 800 more this year, aiming to prepare five- year entrants to pursue physics at the leaving certificate level. Australia offers vast opportunities for physics careers.
