ACT declares total fire ban and forest closures today

The ACT Bushfire Council imposes a 24 hour total fire ban from midnight to midnight with no exceptions. Gas barbecues outside built up areas are banned and penalties include fines up to 5200 or imprisonment up to months. Forests close and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve remains shut during the ban period.

Tenders to call for Belconnen Catholic high school

Monsignor J P Kelly of the ACT Catholic Education Office said tenders would be called soon for a Roman Catholic high school in Belconnen for Forms 1 to 4 at the Kingsford Smith Drive and Southern Cross Drive intersection. He noted that tenders for a Wanniassa school depend on a rail loan and capital aid, and that tenders for Catholic primary schools at Kambah Evatt require finance, with 1976 completion hoped but not yet funded.

GMH jobs still in doubt in Melbourne talks

In Melbourne GMH officials and Acting Prime Minister Dr Cairns failed to reach a solution over the future of 5000 car workers threatened with retrenchment. GMH managing director Damon Martin said discussions aimed at avoiding retrenchments were inconclusive and that a course of action would be considered. He noted GMH could not reduce car prices. IRA Leader Arrested in Dublin Suburb
