Minister proposes hearings to regulate ACT poker machines
The ACT conflict over whether poker machines should be allowed may be resolved by empowering a magistrate to grant licences and hold public hearings with conditions. Minister En Derby argues against a referendum, warning it could weaponize majority views against minorities. He suggests a system where clubs install machines only under licenced oversight, with public hearings and checks on payouts and revocable conditions. The ACT Licensed Clubs Association backs a statutory control board to supervise machines.
