The Canberra passengers stranded at Malta will be flown home starting Tuesday. Captain L N Hill said 2,230 people would be transported by international airliners within the coming week, using aircraft normally employed on scheduled routes.
A liner bound for Australia suffers a main switchboard fire near Naples halting its voyage. Captain Walit Vickers reports smoke and a six hour delay. Italian rescue expected. passengers press for air fare home or alternative routes as repairs in Malta proceed.
Reported U S plans indicate a continuing campaign against Communist guerrillas in Vietnam with aims to seize shrimp fisheries and curb charcoal and rum production. Government spokesmen say U S aid, including helicopter transport for South Vietnamese forces, will persist for months.
The government analyst hopes to identify a slow acting poison as the cause of death for Dr. Gilbert Bogle and Mrs. Margaret Chandler, found near Lane Cove on New Year’s Eve. Police note a link to a Balmain party attended by guests and a Chatswood visit by photographer Kenneth Nash. Details describe the couple as bright, devoted parents living in Croydon with a shared interest in vintage cars and dachshunds.
Police report 36 charges against a group of youths from Four Queanbeyan aged 16 18 19 for stolen car parts and accessories mostly occurring on Christmas night. Det R Pight and Luton lead inquiries with many items recovered though several victims did not report thefts. Three girls aged 15 16 and 17 faced drunkenness and exposure to moral danger charges after weekend custody. An accident on Northbourne Avenue involved 14 and 15 year olds among those arrested.
An eight year old Canberran boy John Sydney Gibb and a 35 year old man Douglas Clive Gardner drowned after being swept by a strong undertow off North Wollongong. Neil Leonard Gibb, 61, was saved. Lifesavers and surfers attempted rescues. Gardner died later in hospital and John died at the scene.
In a weekend crash near Fairbairn Avenue, three Queanbeyan youths were hurt when their car overturned. Lynn Hanahan, 14, was the only injured person taken to Community Hospital before being released after treatment. Police noted about 50 cars and 150 onlookers gathered at the scene.
Prime Minister Menzies leaves Melbourne hospital after two days rest. He plans to convalesce in Sydney or Canberra for a week or ten days. Press Secretary Maley said actors urged him to take it easy before resuming work as Dame Pattie greeted him and crowds clapped.
