A Cairo communique reports Italian troops in the Northern sector of Bardia surrender before nightfall. Australian units penetrated into Bardia town and enemy resistance narrowed to a restricted area at the southeastern perimeter. Prisoners number in the thousands.
The Cairo AP correspondent says the fate of Bardia was sealed as Libyan defenses collapsed under a fierce Australian assault. British warships blasted coastal positions and Italian tanks and transports were silenced. Thousands of Italians surrendered as the Australian attack achieved its objective of 6,000 prisoners.
Cairo communique confirms over 6000 prisoners taken by Australians at Bardia on the first day of the operation. Heavy bombing in the Middle East preceded dawn tanks and artillery as Australian troops broke inner defences and pressed the assault through gaps in wire.
