In the Mekong Delta a South Vietnamese patrol freed a Green Beret officer held by the Vietcong since 1963. He was emaciated and malnourished, taken to a military hospital, and his identity withheld pending next of kin notification. The rescue occurred in the Ca Mau swamps during a 21st Division sweep.
Canberra saw little public celebration on New Year's Eve 1969 with private parties as the main events. A few operatic horn blasts and police patrols marked the night as revelers marked the arrival of 18 IMF with minimal public display.
The Queen created 18 Australian knights and a dame in the New Year Honours List. Civilian awards honor medicine science religion and industry with top honours to Deputy Prime Minister McEwen as a Companion of Honour. Recipients include Archbishop Gilroy Cardinal Sir Norman Gilroy Speaker Sir Kevin Ellis and others. Dame Elia Macknight receives Dame Commander for medical school leadership. Sir Macfarlane Burnet is knighted and Sir Edward Warren is promoted to Knight Commander of the Order CMG.
The Australian New Year honours list names Kenneth Jones of Braddon as CBE for public service and B A Rochford as Queen's Police Medal recipient. It highlights MBE recipients including Constance Hauser and Syd ney swimmer Michael Wenden and squash champion Heather McKay. The British list includes four life peers and 25 knights with Sir Learie Constantine as first non white peer in 50 years. Full Australian and British honou rs listed on page 6.
The Minister for External Territories Mr Barnes appoints a two man committee to study public service arbitration in Papua New Guinea. The Territory's House of Assembly passed legislation in November changing the system.
The Security Council prepares for another session over the Middle East crisis with expectations of condemning Saturday’s Israeli attack on Beirut airport but likely opposing sanctions. Arab raids have already hit Israeli villages amid mounting regional tensions.
A helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff near Roma on Tuesday. Pilot Alan Spring, 35, of Brisbane, and his passenger escaped with slight shock and abrasions. The other occupant is identified as a select fuel supplier from Sydney.
An eye witness recounted a Viscount 700 crash near Inde Station 26 miles south of Port Hedland. The chartered airliner from Perth to Port Hedland carried 21 passengers and five crew, with 14 WA residents, four from the eastern States and three from overseas. Sir Donald Anderson ordered withdrawal of remaining Viscount 700s in Australia.
Mrs Wilson heard a screaming noise and saw a silver aircraft spin and break up near her home. Her husband, a stockman, and station manager Colin Briarley later witnessed smoke, wreckage, and charred bodies in the bush. Royal Flying Doctor radio linked to the Department of Civil Aviation for ground direction.
Dr Ken Cho from Port Hedland District Hospital was first on scene and declared no survivors. A DCA Perth team arrived at 6.30pm as police barred entry. The crash site lies between Turner River and the Mount Newman Port Hedland rail line, in rugged bushland with 113 degree heat. Dr Gary Hastwell reported turbulent conditions near the moment of impact, though a radio message before the crash claimed good conditions.
Sir Donald Anderson announced the withdrawal from service of the five Viscount 700 series after a conference with TAA and Ansett experts. It is a precautionary measure pending further advice from investigators. The 800 series remains in operation. The move aims to protect the travelling public amid a crash investigation.
The Bass Strait Marlin well blowout was stopped within hours of landing on the platform. Paul Adair and his team killed the blowout and halted the gas boil about 33 miles off Lakes Entrance, 140 miles east of Melbourne. Gas reappeared briefly but vanished after 11.30 p.m.
Prime Minister Gorton suggests a two day meeting with State Premiers in Canberra on March 13 and 14 to discuss issues raised by the Adelaide gathering. NSW Premier Askin confirms a letter accepting the proposal and notes the potential extension to March 14 if needed. The move follows sustained pressure from Premiers led by Askin and Sir Henry Bolte to confront Canberra in an election year.
