Canberra gave the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh a warm relaxed departure yesterday. Only 300 people watched the brief ceremony at R.A.A.F. Base Fairbairn before the Royal couple flew by Convair to Adelaide.
The Queen left Government House at 2 05 pm in an open car waving to families workers and officials in Yaralumla and nearby areas. At Fairbairn she met the Governor General Viscount De Lisle and Dame Pattie Menzies before boarding the Royal aircraft. The Queen then flew to Canberra where at 10 50 am she presided over a Privy Council meeting naming six new members.
The Queen rests aboard Britannia in Port Adelaide before a welcome at Adelaide Town Hall and a National Gallery visit. Crowds of thousands line the route as the royal party tours city streets and plans a garden party, elder park music festival, and Torrens Lake pageant aboard a decorated barge.
The omission of Mr. W. J. Byrne from a Queen’s reception at Parliament House drew sharp criticism at the Advisory Council meeting. A government spokesman said the Prime Minister decided when enough guests were invited, defending the guest list as a government function.
An 1863 explosive cannonball dredged off Nigeria was dismantled at Portsmouth by Royal Navy mine disposal experts. A Navy spokesman said the cannonball was potentially dangerous and its gun powder remained in suspicious condition.
The Imperial General Staff head General Sir Richard Hull met Indian Prime Minister Nehru for 40 minutes. After the talks he planned to fly to Malaya on Wednesday and then to Australia.
Senator Gorton after talks stressed the word possible in discussing possible coordination of defence equipment development. No immediate details on equipment type were given. He met U S officials at the State Department and the Pentagon to review Pacific defence issues.
A near-new Piper Super Cub owned by Bridport fisherman Mr. R. R. Richey overturned on a runway causing about £3,000 damage. Police blocked roads. civilians searched nearby bushes. A man was arrested at 1.30 p.m. The plane, valued at £6,000, is fitted with a beach landing undercarriage and aids fishing hauls up to 40 tons.
The seven member European Free Trade Association plans to abolish internal tariffs during 1966. Denmark's Foreign Minister said ministers would set a timetable after Britain failed to join the Common Market. Austria remains an exception with existing relations to the Market.
A blaze at the Port Kembla steelworks naphthalene plant caused a tar smelling smoke plume and 40 foot flames. The fire started in the by products section and spread to a storage tank. No injuries reported and damage estimates were not yet known.
