A report from a direct telecast titled Canberra 959 cited remarks by Finnish carpenter Mr Seppo Risku, Department of Immigration official Mr Netliv, and ABC announcer Mr G Chisholm during the test broadcast atop the MLC Building yesterday.
In a tour of Australia and New Zealand Dr Subandrio reiterated Indonesia would not use force to press its West New Guinea claims. He warned of a time limit on negotiations with the Netherlands and urged Australia to back Indonesia as a shield for regional security. Parliament debated the pact with critics calling it a misstep and urged recognition of its possible faults while some MPs proposed alternative remedies.
Flood danger gradually eases across New South Wales as the cyclonic low pressure migrates away from the coast. The low, located about 300 miles offshore near Moruya, moves southeast at 20 knots. Widespread damage to dairy grazing land, especially in the South Grafton area, is reported.
The Democratic Labour Party will contest borderline seats likely to decide Cahill Government's fate. Seats listed include Dubbo Mudger Bondi Concord North Sydney Rockdale Ryde with campaigns against Landa in Bondi Enticknap in Murrumbidgee and Davis Hughes in Armidale while Cahill himself is unopposed in Cooks River. The general secretary Kane will run in Concord.
The Road Safety Council published the full text of section 61m of the Motor Traffic Ordinance to dispel bush-lawyer myths about give-way rights. Chairman BD Day criticized misleading views while urging drivers to acknowledge the give-way rule and support safer traffic flow at major intersections.
A special committee led by Sir Richard Boyer urges open competition for Commonwealth Public Service appointments, ending seniority in promotions, and instituting efficiency criteria and education standards. It calls for Public Service Board recommendations for permanent secretaries, removal of marriage bar, and review of medical standards to aid physically handicapped applicants.
Athens sources say a final agreement on Cyprus was reached in London with Archbishop Makarios poised to accept a plan backed by Britain Greece Turkey and Turkish Cypriots. Some Greek Cypriot officials push for a plebiscite arguing legitimacy requires direct consent of the people.
