Tragic Fire Claims Two Babies Near Mildura Trotting Track

At a trotting meeting in Mildura two toddlers Dixie Gay Lyons aged two and her six month old brother Terrance died in a car fire outside the venue. Parents Terrance and Dixie Lyons of Koornlong had left three other children inside the track as flames engulfed the vehicle. Police and emergency crews battled to reach the burning car before the bodies were recovered. Terrance suffered extensive burns, while Dixie may have succumbed to smoke before the blaze reached her.

Gunman dies after police gun battle in Stockton

Newcastle reports a 88 year old gunman Ronald Hallard of Sydney died in Newcastle Hospital after a head wound from a gun battle with police at Stockton last night. Ballard robbed Bruce Foster, fled by taxi, fired on officers near the Gladstony Hotel breakwater before being shot and found unconscious with a pistol beneath him.

Youth Surfer Rescues Himself After 23-Hour Struggle

Kempsey onlookers watched 19 year old John Westaway of East Kempsey endure a harrowing undertow and 30 ft waves at Crescent Beach. Westaway, along with teammates Robert Landrigan and Garry Gillies, battled the sea while rescuers and an aircraft searched for him after he vanished beneath boiling surf. He finally reemerged and was saved, stunning crowds who feared a drowning.

Missing seaman reported off River Burdekin on voyage

Sydney a Sunday report says two coastal ships searched for seaman J Mann of Carrington missing after going overboard in heavy seas yesterday afternoon near Swansea on a River Burdekin voyage from Newcastle to Geelong Victoria. Newcastle police organized land searches for his body today.
