AAP reports a new snowstorm blanketing parts of Oklahoma with over nine inches of snow while northeastern states cope with a heavy weekend fall. The storms have caused at least 62 deaths across affected areas.
Government and Pharmaceutical Services announce a new five shilling prescription plan for doctors prescriptions. Patients will pay five shillings per prescription or repeat item, with pensioners’ entitlements remaining free. Guild officials estimate sixty percent of drugs to be covered under the scheme with the remainder paid at normal charges.
Indonesian exile Mohamad Rasjid told a Paris press conference that Soviet Premier Khrushchev would lease naval and air bases in Indonesia during his visit. Rasjid alleges Ambon and Ceram area, 570 miles north of Australia, would host bases as part of a broader Indonesian state union plan.
Depositors boosted total savings in 1959 by about £125 million, with December 1958 showing a £4.5 million rise. Commonwealth Savings Bank held the largest deposits at £778,078,000, against Australia’s total £1,460,522,000. December gains occurred in New South Wales about £1,200,000 and the Australian Capital Territory £20,000.

Queanbeyan fire brigade contained a large fire at a fibrous plaster factory on Ross Road owned by W. H. Cockra and Son. A storeroom attached to the building burned while firemen laid 400 yards of hose and fought for an hour to prevent the main section from burning. Storerooms and stock including motor tyres were destroyed. Cause undetermined.
Four prisoners escaped Beechworth Prison Farm but were found. One man, Philpott, was seen on a bicycle about eight miles from Yackandandah on the road to Wodonga. Police traced him and he surrendered after morning.
A mystery submarine hunted by the Argentine Navy for more than a fortnight may have escaped. Officials in Buenos Aires criticized a Mikoyan remark about Soviet anti-submarine limits. The Navy and embassy spokesmen denied any Soviet warships near the coast as reporters pressed for details.
