Civil war threatened in the Congo as United Nations troops remain on alert after Patrice Lumumba and five companions were killed. The London Daily Express reports thousands of white residents fear a bloodbath amid reprisals in the simmering nation.
U N alert in New York as Security Council members blame colonialists for Lumumba death. Katanga Interior Minister Munongo says the UN will not be allowed to conduct an on the spot investigation or visit Lumumba's graves. Moscow radio accuses Hammarskjold and colonialists of murder, while protests flare in Rome London and global capitals.
