France announces plans to build a strategic nuclear force to ensure national independence. A French test in the Sahara yielded a bomb described as far larger than Hiroshima and linked to delivery by a new fleet of Mystere IV jets.
A one day stoppage is set at the Upper Cotter dam as workers protest the promised standard of meals and accommodation. The Australian Workers Union and Trades and Labour Council seek compensation for disrupted pay and time lost. In London the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are expected to visit Fries and relatives during the weekend amid reports the baby may be born on Saturday. A brisk wind did not deter the crowds flocking to the palace area as midwife Sister Helen Kowe remained at the palace. The Duke has no public engagements tomorrow, with plans in London on Wednesday and Thursday and a likely engagement on Friday.
