A devastating fire in Hong Kong spreads rapidly through a market area trapping people on rooftops and in stalls. Squatters jump to escape flames, with one woman and two children killed and ten hospitalised. Police and officials struggle to control the chaos as refugees flood into the city.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles will spend three days in Australia beginning March 11 for a conference. He will not visit any part of Asia during the absence. After the conference he will return to help prepare for a meeting among Eisenhower, Macmillan, and Bermuda.
In Penang the Chief Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman said British troops would continue to combat militant Communism in Malaya after independence on August 31. He noted the Communist threat and warned the country to stay vigilant as the government prepares for rural elections and alliances amid unrest in Malaya.
Mr A E Monk president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions rejected a proposal to join the Economic Advisory Council saying representation would be inappropriate for the ACTU The Prime Minister Mr Menzies invited him to join but the decision was turned down by the ACTU Interstate Executive The union would still submit views on economic questions as they affect workers.
