The government faced opposition as the Associated Chambers of Manufactures urged withdrawal of restric tive trade legislation. President T M Ramsay warned the proposals would bring economic commercial and legal consequences and cause widespread industry apprehension and uncertainty.
In Parliament Mr Ramsay criticized Sir Garfield Barwick’s proposals as excessively expansive and harmful to Australia. He warned manufacturing industries remain unconvinced of the need for new legislation and urged limiting any act to clearly proven practices that oppose national interests.
Canberra readies for a royal visit next Monday with tidying and civic improvements. Fairbairn Avenue has been widened and over 200000 flowers transplanted from Yarralumla nursery have transformed the heart of the city. Lawn mowing along the lakeshore, plantings between major avenues, weed removal near Russell Hill, and guide post adjustments accompany the routine biannual clean up.
In Wellington the Queen pledged confidence in the Commonwealth’s future and multiracial partnership as New Zealand’s Parliament opened for the 1963 session. She spoke on markets, development aid, and the Colombo Plan, amid royal visit ceremonies and a busy North Island tour.
Six men died in electrocution events in New South Wales and Queensland. In NSW at an oil rig site near Kyoegle three workers Roy Mc Avaney Charles Dinham and Carly Chandler were killed when a pump received a full electric charge. Driller Geddon Sherwood survived and another man was hospitalized. In Queensland three brothers aged 24 14 and 11 died on a farm at Old Cannindah near Mont after a shed was lifted by a storm and a live electric wire was touched during rescue efforts. their dog died as well. The Mid Western Woodside-Lakes Entrance company operated at the NSW site.
Senior federal cabinet ministers closed a two day survey on the economy by meeting with the Manufacturing Industry Advisory Council and the Export Development Council. They will review suggestions on unemployment housing and plans to boost exports with a potential export drive to Asia and Africa.
Mackay reports a 10 year old boy died after being stung by an unidentified object in the water at Bucasia Beach about 12 miles from Mackay today.
