A man believed to be U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers arrived near Washington in a U S Air Force plane. Officials shielded his identity as Powers had been released by Russia yesterday in exchange for Colonel Randolph Abel a convicted Soviet spy.
A U S plane landed at a Washington base as two men fled by helicopter. One man, Powers, was released after another, Frederick Pryor, a student, also freed. Pryor, a Free University of West Berlin student, said Powers denied mistreatment and hinted at espionage links. State Department cautioned against reading the release as easing East West tensions. East Berlin said tightened secrecy surrounded Colonel Abels movements for an extended period.

Canberra’s 1914 steam engine 1210, first to haul a train into the city, made its final trip by road on Surdayby. An Army tank transporter moved it from the yards to a plinth beside Canberra Railway Station, with officials guiding the reverse onto temporary rails. The removal took five hours and included taking off the headlight and fittings to deter souvenir hunters and vandals.

A trainee was bruised when a sleeper fell on a foot during loading. The transport faced alignment issues and required digging holes to lower its wheels. Officials removed the headlight and movable fittings to deter souvenir hunters.
In a speech on changes to extend temporary import protection, Mr McEwen outlined a plan to quicken temporary duties and create a special advisory authority under tighter controls. The government would align this with the Tar Board Act and allow written evidence or declarations to speed protective actions.
