In Concord two clashes between Lebanese migrant groups left fifteen injured. Police confiscated weapons, charged twelve men with offensive behaviour, and more charges pending as the crowd dispersed around 4 am after a second brawl involving about 60 migrants.
A blaze partially destroyed the Hatemans Bay Saw Milling Company Pty Ltd on the Princes Highway yesterday afternoon. Police spokesperson said damage to the building machinery and electrical equipment was estimated at 19000 dollars.
Melbourne resident Robert Senses died Friday after a long illness. His funeral will be held tomorrow at St Andrews Thorpite, Cast Melbourne.

The ACT Minister Bryant announced a rise in third party insurance premiums from 172.25 to 256.70, a 496 increase, which the Canberra Taxi Proprietors Association says could force higher taxi fares. Association head Ken Lambert notes ACT rates are among the lowest and that the fare increase application, filed last September, may be amended again as living costs and insurance costs climb. Goulburn jail warders used teargas to control a 3 pm disturbance as about 80 prisoners revolted after basketball and tennis. Two teargas canisters were deployed, one inmate injured, and most prisoners returned to cells by 3 45 pm with police perimeter shielding the facility. Authorities said no warning was issued to the prison, and the Bathurst riot a week earlier involved transferred inmates not participating here.
Labour Minister Cameron told Cabinet colleagues and State Governments not to rush a 35 hour week in public services. He cited record overtime as evidence skilled resources were stretched and said this should influence any early across the board reduction of standard hours. Unemployment figures for January were issued with the remarks.
Figures show 18,347 more unemployed to 121,082 and 11,410 more vacancies to 90,531. Queensland accounts for about half the rise with 9,186 more unemployed to 22,224 and vacancies up 146 to 7,375. In Canberra a DF A spokesman said messages between the New South Wales Corporate Affairs Commission and Australian businessman Alexander Barton were exchanged. Barton said he would return to Australia if his son Thomas could remain in Rio de Janeiro. The Australian Embassy and officials denied arrests or detentions. Barton denied fleeing Australia and insisted he has no charges against him. Barton’s lawyer Fragoso said he would defend against any charges and claimed the government is persecuting him. The NSW Corporate Affairs Commission seeks to question the Bartons over the failure of several companies under their control.
In Melbourne, Murray Valley encephalitis is blamed for low fruit harvest turnout in the Mildura district of northwest Victoria. Only 400 of an expected 1,000 harvest hands arrived for the Sunraysia grape harvest, while six patients at Fairfield Hospital remained in unchanged condition since Friday.
In Sydney on Sunday, Louis Richard Dupond of Nar Narandra died at Narrandera Hospital after being bashed with an iron bar by six young motor cyclists at an all night service station. His wife, unable to intervene, stood by as police seek six suspects.
