President Nixon voices deep concern over the Soviet nuclear missile buildup and warns that the United States may pursue a new arms race if Moscow does not show restraint. He calls for SALT progress to ease tensions while preserving strategic balance.
A Canberra builder Mr G Hermely of Cook was chased from a Weetangera building site by about 15 men who pulled down foundations and shouted threats. He said workers told him and his assistant to stop work and that he could not afford more delays. Three cases of malicious damage to building sites in Weetangera were reported to police. The ACT Trades and Labour Council pressed for law and order while unions met to discuss a proposed settlement with Commonwealth Conciliation Commissioner Holmes. More than 1,390 building workers attended a Lakeside Hotel meeting and planned further talks, with no work resuming before Monday.
A white dingo that killed more than 40 sheep in the Wee Jasper district near Mear Yast was shot on Wednesday. Local authorities reported the animal posed a severe threat to livestock and urged precaution during grazing hours.
Governor elect Sir Colin Hannah will be sworn in on March 21 in Queensland. Premier Bijleke Petersen announced the date yesterday.
Police report two buckets of gold were found in a Padington home after a fire that killed 72 year old Mis ce Murray yesterday. Investigators say the flames caused a fatal outcome and value details were noted with the discovery.
The government plans a five year program to reorganise health and social services through the National Health Service. About 13 million will be allocated in 1974 with 170 new district and general hospitals to be built or expanded. Centres will showcase new treatment methods under Sir Keith Joseph. The British Medical Association welcomed the plan.
A Canberra rental study shows furnished three-bedroom houses rose 35 percent from 1968 to 1971, from 32 to 43.19 dollars monthly. Unfurnished three-bedrooms climbed 34.3 percent from 27.45 to 46.84. Other categories also posted increases, with flats and bed-sitters showing smaller gains.
Two girls aged 18 and 14 were committed for trial on a murder charge in Gosford. They allegedly confessed to killing a three year old boy while two other children were in their care. The trial is set to begin in the Supreme Court in Sydney on February 28.
Australian Trade Union leader Mr Hawke flew from Melbourne to Nowra to confer with Sir Richard Kirby head of the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission on issues of extreme national importance connected with the Victorian power dispute. Kirby said details could not be disclosed yet and a morning discussion would be held. Hawke arrived at Nowra aerodrome and was taken to Kirby’s holiday home at Berrara before talks tomorrow.
Sir Richard and Mr Hawke discussed the power dispute in Victoria during Hawke’s holiday stop at Nowra aerodrome. Hawke pledged to work toward ending the strike as ACTU leaders push for an early settlement, amid threats and police protection. Officials warned of massive job losses and production shutdowns across Victoria and South Australia as employers forecast widespread layoffs and plant idle time.

ComAlco Bauzite and Aluminium group reports net profit of 17.6 million for the year to December 31 down from 17 million the previous year. General Motors Holdens profit for the year ended December 31 falls sharply to 18.9 million from 27.7 million previously.
A 45-year-old fitter from Oakleigh was charged with six counts after a siege at Spaceline Homes Pty Ltd in Glen Waverley. He allegedly demanded money with menaces and assaulted with a weapon after entering the director’s office with a .22 rifle, firing into the floor during a one hour forty minute incident. Company executives linked the event to a dispute pursued in arbitration.
Sydney artist Clifton Pugh wins the Archibald Prize for 1971 with a portrait of Sir John McEwen. The $2,400 prize was announced by NSW Art Gallery director Peter Laverty. Pugh previously won in 1965 with a portrait of Mr KR. A. Henderson.
