In Sydney Mr Ward said he would stand for inclusion in the federal Labor leadership ballot on the 16th, delaying until others spoke. A South Australian MP released his letter noting his loyalty, willingness to resign after 12 months, and urging party unity amid leadership disputes.

The Malayan premier announced his resignation saying he wished to devote time to his party UMNO of which he is president. He will take six months leave with Razak acting prime minister until April 15 and Ismail Abdul Rahman named deputy. The king has accepted the resignation and no change to foreign policy or anti Communist stance is expected.
