Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring astronomers mapped an arc of ultra high central hydrogen gas streaming from the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds toward the Milky Way. Using the CSIRO Parkes 18 metre telescope they traced filaments called the tail and the bridge spanning about 170000 light years from the Clouds to our galaxy. The discovery aims to explain aspects of stellar and galactic evolution and corroborates long-suggested interconnections between the Clouds and the Milky Way.
