Sydney Thursday saw two notable speeches by the Queen and a royal visit. The Queen addressed Parliament and a women’s luncheon after a formal arrival with the Duke, amid cheering crowds and university welcomes.
A Fire Brigade official said yesterday that new colours were adopted for hydrants with white tops and end tops. The silver coat reflects headlights at night, improving visibility.

Thousands of fans, mainly women, mobbed the Queen and Duke of Hamburgh as they arrived for a luncheon and a university visit. Cabinet met in Sydney from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. today and a subcommittee met until 6.30 p.m. No date for the federal election was decided yet though ministers generally favor May 22. The next Cabinet meeting in Canberra is set for tomorrow week to fix the firm date.
A Sydney florist will decorate Parliament House with daily changing displays. Mowers will come from Parliament House gardens, Canberra towers, and Sydney. About 5 000 blooms and 100 tubes of shrubs will line verandahs for the Parliament opening banquet and state bar. The display includes begonias and a vivid Parliamentary garden showing roses, delphiniums, phlox, petunias, and marigolds.
