Rioters seized Bathurst maximum security jail in an uprising described as the worst ever. Twelve prisoners were wounded by shotgun blasts, two seriously, as fires raged and wards regained control by evening. Injuries include gunshot wounds to limbs and severe chest and organ damage. Officials say the riot was planned and linked to months of tension.
The Minister for the Capital Territory Mr Bryant said Melbourne reports that a government operated third party insurance scheme could be introduced in the ACT later this year. He noted the present scheme is inadequate and costs are rising, with study of Victoria’s no fault liability model and feasibility assessment to follow. The ACT department will examine road safety, vehicle insurance and petrol retailing with motorist cooperation, after the ACT Premium Advisory Committee urged a 48 percent premium rise which would lift private car third party from 46 to 367.90 dollars.
In Melbourne Mrs Char mjan Biggs known as Mrs Brent says she will not travel to London to see her recaptured husband Ronald Biggs the Great Train Robber. She cites wishing to protect her children in Fast Doncaster and refuses to sell her story to the Press. Brazil’s police seek to handle the case as Scotland Yard’s detectives face scrutiny over their role.
In Sao Paulo a skyscraper blaze killed hundreds as officials said the death toll rose past 725. A state mortuary official warned of no morgue space and ongoing hospital deaths while firemen cited the lack of fire escapes and a rooftop helicopter pad as critical failings.
Detectives raided a Griffith Riverina property uncovering five acres of marihuana intermingled with crops and worth about 250000 on the black market. A 24 year old farmer faces possession charges after a 24 hour watch led to his arrest. 20 locals helped burn plants as detectives investigated over the weekend.
Four other wounded prisoners remained in Bathurst jail as riots raged causing extensive damage. Police from multiple towns surrounded the facility while 80 to 100 officers faced armed inmates equipped with petrol bombs and improvised weapons. Witnesses cited explosive conditions and calls for a Royal Commission led by a Supreme Court judge to probe jail conditions.
Federal Labour Minister Cameron will meet ABOA leaders Keith Remington and John Sanders at Trades Hall to push a resolution in the bank dispute. ABOA seeks 18 percent for 45 000 members after initial demands of 25 9 percent, with talks ahead of Arbitration Commission hearing.
