Holiday crowds in Canberra as heat wave shapes travel
The heat and warm forecast kept tourists from visiting Canberra and instead heading to the coast. A total of 8317 people visited the Australian War Memorial over the holidays, about the same as last year. Parliament House saw about 2700 visitors, while the Canberra Tourist Bureau and Accommodations Centre reported high inquiries and strong booking. Camper numbers at Black Mountain camp were above average with many still arriving late yesterday. Planes out of Canberra were fully booked along with the 5.12 pm diesel to Sydney as holiday traffic peaked.
