The Soviet Premier Krushchev said he expected East West agreement in 1964 on arms control and disarmament. He urged mutual restraint, reduced military spending, non aggression pacts with Warsaw powers, and de nuclearised zones. British PM Douglas Home echoed hopes for peaceful coexistence.
Johnson and Erhard press for peace and new initiatives with the Soviet Union. A joint communique after their Bonn talks stresses defending basic rights in divided Germany, expanding Atlantic partnership, and pursuing broader trade and nuclear force cooperation.
The 73ft schooner Astor took line honours in the 1963 Sydney Hobart Race, finishing at 9:52 PM and repeating its 1961 victory. It led the field by several hours over the next-closest yacht, the 39ft sloop Freya, as other contenders Haun, Sea Wind, Tahuna and Mercedes trailed to dawn. President Johnson closed a two day international conference with West German Chancellor Dr. Erhard. They reached a pact on East-West relations after informal talks ending with a church service scene captured by Radio.

Police appealed for information after a passenger dropped three bottles of dangerous drugs on a bike between Kingston shopping area and 14th Street yesterday at about 5 p.m. Two small bottles held tablets and an 8 oz bottle held a mixture. Citizens are urged to hand the drugs to police to prevent child exposure.

The Navy announces Rear Admiral O H Becher will become Flag Officer Commanding HM Australian Fleet next Monday, succeeding Rear Admiral Alan McNicoll who has led the fleet for two years. McNicoll moves to a Canberra Naval Board post, with future duties in the East Australian Area.
A Jacksonville fire killed at least 21 people in a 14 story hotel blaze. Dozens were injured as guests escaped via improvised ropes of blankets and sheets, with two deaths caused when the improvised lines failed.
Sydney reports a day-long air and sea search for five men believed missing from the trawler Wiomna near the North Coast. The crew includes owner Bruce Mylott and Ballina residents William Giles and Robert Trefell, plus Port Macquarie natives Ross Elford and Ronald Hyde. The search area extended from Tweed Heads to Smoky Cape.
British Secretary Duncas Sandys announced that Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders signed a plan to replace local troops with British forces and establish a neutral zone. Talks chaired by Sandys followed heavy clashes in Nicosia with about 300 deaths reported since December.
The rate of inflow to Lake Burley Griffin dropped to 0 cusecs from 150 on December 20, with the lake level at 1,811.87 ft. Officials warned of temporary hazards as rising water swamps stumps, rocks, and holes. legislation restricts lakebed and water use to authorized construction and maintenance, with future ordinances to adjust conditions.
