United Nations troops seized Kipushi mining town as Katangan leader Moise Tshombe reportedly arrived in Salisbury Rhodesia. UN said 17 Katangan gendarmes captured in Kipushi with 4 airlifted to Kamina.
UN troops report four dead and 26 wounded since operations began as Elisabethville falls to advance units. Tshombe flees amid seizure of bank and city, while Katanga forces retreat leaving arms, with UN pledging decisive action and minimal force. Britain urges immediate cease fire and negotiated settlement. Belgian nationals evacuated.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry memo denounces Indian demands as unreasonable and says New Delhi created side issues that hinder cease fire talks. It claims Indian intrusions at Spangur Lake and airspace violations undermine any unilateral cease-fire and stresses that prior border agreements are not accepted. Bandaranaike notes Afro Asian states back Colombo proposals as a basis for negotiations.

Sydney report details pilot Brian Wetless of Illawarra Flying School who radioed Mascot Airport after an engine cut out while trailing a 40 ft streamer. He jettisoned the banner and landed safely at Mascot as ambulances and fire engines stood by. he was only slightly shaken.
Constable Leigh Gallagher of Eaglehawk recaptured two 19 year old escapees near Bendigo after they overpowered him, drove him 210 miles to Robinvale, and robbed him. He later escaped, borrowed a rifle, and arrested the youths. The pair, part of a Bendigo Training Prison breakout, had tied together blankets to descend from a cell window.
Sydney officials announced Solo the provisional handicap winner of the Sydney Hobart race. Ondine won line honours with Astor close behind, while Galatea is third on corrected time. Rival and Ruthean finish far back on handicaps. Julie unofficially fourth.
Walter Lewis of Williamsport Ohio received the Burlington liar club’s 1962 world champion award for a dry well story. The tale says the canary bird had to pull up the well and run it through a wringer to get a drink.
A doctor and a nursing sister attempting to reach the dysentery epidemic victims at Lockhart River mission were forced back. Seventy aboriginals at the mission are ill, with a native man and child dead. An air flight from Cairns failed due to weather.
