ACT Police to use customs computer for disaster lists
ACT Police will start using a Department of Customs computer to speed processing of lists of people killed injured or evacuated after the disaster. More than 15 000 names are on file with six telex machines, now being transferred to cards for rapid cross checking. Inspector Col Winchester said the new system greatly eases inquiries as 40 officers work around the clock at the operations centre handling local national and international calls and coordinating information. The centre reported hundreds of offers of help and issued evacuee lists with 104 people at 9 pm.
