British army and air force units began patrols around Nicosia under a cease-fire reached after four days of fighting between Greek and Turkish communities. Greek Turkish patrols join with British forces to form a joint peace-preserving force under the agreement.

Mr W Masters, a pest exterminator, was overcome by gas yesterday while fumigating a house owned by Mrs Alice Schreiner at 25 State Circle Forrest. The incident, blamed on a leaking mask, left Masters semi conscious and in hospital. a colleague, Mr T E Cratchley, assisted. The manager Mr A C Campbell reported Masters’s condition as satisfactory yesterday.
Two cadets from Australia’s 2,000-strong sea cadet corps joined the Nella Dan on a trip to the icy wastelands. Colt. Schoevers was selected for the voyage. The ship, overdue by two days, celebrated Christmas at sea off Tasmania as bad weather delayed the return. On deck were Bruce Ellwood of Victoria Don Miles of Victoria Jack Rhemren of Queensland Bob Bergin of Western Australia John Tarbuck of New South Wales and Frank Chamberlain of Victoria.
A spokesman revised Lakonia cruise tolls with 64 missing and 96 dead, and total aboard 1 041 after relatives were counted. A Greek inquiry was announced as Captain Zarbis arrived in Madrid to testify, amid British demands for a Britain led investigation.

The match endured in heat above 100 degrees at Memorial Drive center court with a large crowd. The Australians Newcombe and Emerson must win the remaining singles to retain the Cup.
The American-designed 44ft sloop Sea Winds held a clear lead with several miles to Salacia and Mercedes II close behind. Caprice of Huon slipped to fifth as Lorita Maria rose, while Astor and Trina lagged, all battling a 15 knot breeze that favored the front runners and left much of the fleet scattered about 60 miles.

Hobart hosted a state funeral for former Defence Minister Athol Townley with 3 000 mourners outside the Hobart Baptist Church. Attending were Governor-General Viscount De L’Isle Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies Governor Sir Charles Gairdner Lady Gairdner Tasmanian Premier Reece and federal and state officials. The ceremony included a guard of honour from the Royal Tasmania Regiment and a flyover by Aero Club of Southern Tasmania members.
P T Wheen assistant general manager of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company said Australia’s 1964 sugar output could push total U S shipments well in excess of 215000 short tons. The Washington report lists Australia Mexico and South Africa as early top sellers for 1964 under the global quota. The USDA said import authorization reached 744991 short tons of the one million ton global quota.
A warm spell persists with highs near 92 degrees and 90 plus temperatures since December 20. The night cooled to 47.8 degrees, five below normal, as light winds and afternoon thunderstorms are forecast for today.
