Rescuers recounted dragging people from a collapsed hotel during a blaze in Sydney. Keith Ward a Canadian born 29 bridged a two metre gap from his fourth floor room with a plank and helped others across. Firemen later rescued the rescuers as exits were blocked.
Thirteen people died and 21 injured as a Kings Cross Savoy hotel fire trapped guests on two wooden staircases. Fire brigades used snorkel ladders to rescue others as panic spread. Chief Fire Officer Davis blamed old fire-trap buildings and inadequate safety. The cause was under investigation with a coronial inquiry promised.
A grass blaze in Pringle Street Charnwood yesterday afternoon endangered eight houses. Mrs Key Peters of Imlay Place said she tried in vain to stop it with a fence and noted a potential wider danger if her father-in-law had not cut back the grass. Neighbours evacuated briefly as smoke thickened. Mrs Peters said she contacted the National Capital Development Commission to have the grass burnt off and was referred to the City Parks Authority.

Fretilin calls for aid from Darwin as Indonesian forces escalate attacks in East Timor. Dr Bill Roberts of the East Timor Association urged Australia to intervene, warning of a considerable worsening over the past three days. The East Timor government denounces Jakarta's maneuvers and appeals for Jakarta to respect UN resolutions and withdraw forces. UM envoy expected to be named.
