Canberra bridge crash rails planned by mid year
The National Capital Development Commission will add supplementary crash rails on Canberra’s major bridges by mid next year. It will invite tenders early in the year for Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Parkes Way interchange and Kings Avenue Bridge rail supply and erection. The tubular steel rails will stand about 27 inches high and 64 inch diameter piping, designed to curb vehicle rebound and protect pedestrians, a design tested overseas. The May 28 fatal accident prompted a review of the earlier decision not to reinforce railings.
