Day tripper with a rose meets Canberra press

Mrs Janine Haines, the Australian Democrat appointed to fill a Senate vacancy, arrived in Canberra for her first press conference. The 32 year old noted abortion reservations and said Democratic policy would not be set by every Democrat. She will be replaced on July 1 next year by a new Senator elected December 10.

Hayden Leader Wins Leadership Sees Five New Executives

The Opposition voted major changes to key positions with Hayden Leader becoming leader and Bowen deputy. The new executive includes four fresh members two women Senator Ryan and Senator Melzer plus Dr Cass and Dr Everingham. The leadership ballot saw Hayden defeat Bowen 36-28 and Bowen win deputy 33-29.

High Court jolt to two-airlines policy in Australia

The High Court of Australia dismissed Ansett Airlines injunctive challenge, ruling 3 2 that the government may import four Freight aircraft for Melbourne to Tasmania routes. This clears Ipec Freight and Air Express to import two Argos airfrighters and two Corvairs respectively, marking a setback for Ansett and TAA and strengthening domestic airline control.

Gift shop theft in Garema Place linked to two men

Police investigate a robbery at Gina's Gift Shop in Garema Place last night. Two men robbed the store of cash and cheques before closing time and left quietly. A young woman who warned the proprietor during service is being questioned. Anyone with information should call 497444.
