A helicopter from the USS Valley Forge plucked three men from the stern of the 10,417 ton tanker Pine Ridge after it broke in two in mountainous seas off Cape Hatteras. Coast Guard and Navy ships searched through gale conditions for the remaining crew of 39, with 25 still aboard the stern section.
