Sydney man wins story contest for national honor

The Canberra Times and Commonwealth Bank joint national short story contest awarded Robert M Hood of Collaroy Plateau Sydney the top prize. Hood, 24, plans to travel to London and Europe, aims to be a high school teacher, and has work published in magazines. The judging panel included John Douglas Pringle and Leonie Kra mer.

Privileges of MPs to be reduced

Canberra announced reductions to several MP and former MP privileges introduced by the Labor Government. Proposals include ending life use of official translator duties for long-serving ministers, scrapping reimbursement for private home telephone costs, restoring earlier qualifying periods for life travel passes, and reviewing overseas travel expenses for MPs and spouses. The plan aims to cut about 100,000 dollars in public costs and curb perceived unnecessary luxuries.
