President Soekarno delivers a long awaited address promising liberation of Dutch West New Guinea to a rapt crowd of about 100,000. Indonesia also announces plans to close air space in the region as part of the assertion.
Soekarno warned of force if Dutch provocation continues as Indonesia plans actions against West New Guinea. U S officials promise a strong response to any resort to force. Lisbon sources link talks with China and possible Indonesian operations against Timor and West New Guinea in the coming weeks.
The Indian Army accepted Goa's surrender from Portuguese Governor General Vasselo Silva after a mortar attack on Panjim. General Chaudhouri hoisted the Indian flag as crowds cheered the end of Portuguese rule. Lisbon officials remained noncommittal.
A light plane crashed into a crowd waiting for a flood relief convoy near Seville Spain killing at least 20 and injuring more than 60. The convoy assembled in Madrid carried food clothing and toys to flood victims. The two crew members are among the dead after the craft hit a power line.
Oslo reports Rear-Admiral C Gerhard Wagner will lead Naval Forces in NATO’s new Baltic Approaches Command. Three Danish major generals will head the air and land components. Overall commander is Lieut. General Tage Andersen of the Danish Air Force, announced after December 8.
Police investigate an assault on a 9 year old girl reported yesterday morning. Officers were called to Olympic Pool at 11 am and the girl was taken to Lennox Crossing where she was allegedly forced into a car and later returned to the pool area for examination by a doctor.
Mr. McEwen rejects talk of adding another Minister for the Country Party saying it would not help stable government to argue with Prime Minister Menzies over a decimal point allowance. The Country Party, down three seats, will hold 16 of 68 in the new Parliament while the Liberals drop 12 to 46. Three ministers will be replaced: Dr Cameron Health, Mr Osborne Repatriation, and Mr Hulme Supply. Queenslanders Cameron and Hulme are likely to be replaced by a Queenslander. Potential vacancies include Mr. R Swartz Darling Downs Mr A Fairhall Paterson and Senator Dame Annaelle Rankin.
Menzies was re elected unopposed yesterday as leader of the government and thus remains Prime Minister. Three other members were unopposed for top party positions with Holt staying Deputy Leader and Leader in the House. McEwen remains Leader of the Country Party and its Deputy Prime Minister. Davidson and Turnbull were unopposed as deputy leaders and whip respectively. The Liberal and Country Party meeting lasted under an hour.
