Canberra University College to join Australian National University

Cabinet approves association of Canberra University College with the Australian National University aiming for one university with a single governing body and common degrees. The plan follows extensive consultations with ANU CALC and the Australian Universities Commission and envisions a 12 month committee period to work out an arrangement while preserving self government.

Destroyer Races Assist To Honolulu Station

Destroyer battles through heavy seas near Honolulu yesterday aiding a Dutch tug and two US aircraft carriers adrift in strong winds. The ships were being towed from New York toward Japan when a mid sea storm tore at their rigging and they faced peril at about 1290 miles west of Honolulu.

Road To Coast Closed For A Month In Canberra Area

The main Canberra coastal road via Clyde Mountain will be shut for at least a month after a landslide blocks a 500 yard stretch. Main Roads workers using three bulldozers race to clear the route while considering further landslide risks. Traffic is diverted via Araluen, with Moss Vale and Bateman’s Bay routes as alternatives.

Details Of Association Still To Be Worked Out

The Prime Minister outlined a general plan for the ANU and CUC to form an association with the University of Melbourne. Councils will meet to advise the Government, while safeguarding current students and new enrolments. Gordon McCarthy said the tie with ANU would end Cinderella status and raise undergraduate prestige. doubts remain about Melbourne degree continuations for partly completed students.

Fourth Division Margins Up in Public Service Pay

The Public Service Board announced increases for the Fourth Division to be paid retrospectively from December 3, with first effects expected end January or early February. Sir William Dunk said most of the 162 000 staff would be affected, with some designations excluded or reviewed separately. The rise could reach up to £150 a year, while higher grades fall under Federal Cabinet. Criticism came from ACTU secretary H J Souter in Melbourne urging 28 percent rises for all public service members.
