Twenty three crew members of the German freighter Nautilus 3218 tons are feared dead after the ship encountered hurricane force winds off Texel. Resene ships have picked up 17 bodies.
A Greek vessel Hydraussa rescued 27 crew from the damaged Aristateles steamer after a sinking storm. Gales up to 117 mph swept Britain, grounding ships and closing coastal routes. Royal signals tracked radio traffic as Nimrod warned near Cornwall and a Danish Christmas tree was toppled in Edinburgh.
Spacecraft Mariner II completed a 42 minute scan of Venus from a distance of 366 million miles. Commands from Earth ran through Goldstone station while data was relayed to Canberra and Canberra officials noted good data during the Venus flyby as the mission continued toward a solar orbit.

Brenda Pawenski, 15, of Reid House, was rescued after drowning danger in the Cotter River. Tom Collins of Baylon House and a 20-year-old man saved her from the current yesterday afternoon. Pawenski struck her head on a weir wall and nearly lost consciousness as she was brought ashore. John William O'Tyi of H Candamine Street, Toren, is noted in the account.
Miss Pawenski was injured after being swept over a weir by a strong river current at 3.10 pm half a mile below the Colter bridge. St John Ambulance personnel gave artificial respiration and oxygen before Canberra ambulance transported her to observation at Community Hospital while Constable L E Polter warned others to stay clear of the dangerous area.
