A reservoir above a wealthy Los Angeles neighborhood released over a million tons of water flooding 200 homes and displacing thousands. Six people died as engineers had observed a crack before the wall failed, halting evacuation plans.
A 100 foot high earthen wall at Baldwin Hills failed sending a flood of water and mud through Los Angeles neighborhoods. Evacuation centers opened as Red Cross crews aided residents and an emergency investigation began into subsidence and drilling risks. Damage was estimated at 40 million dollars with federal help sought.
The German Chess Club of Canberra organized a 1 pm to 6 pm event at Civic Square. Kellner defeated 12 players, drew with two, and lost to five, including Alps and Baker. He later played a 4 game blindfold exhibition at a member’s home against Dr D Leslie L Albrecht and G Bernman, losing to Leslie, drawing with Herriman, and beating Albrecht.
The University Council agreed to pay Professor Orr £16,000 and remit costs of a 1956 court action, drawing criticism over use of public funds and academic independence. Orr may travel to Sydney to consult colleagues and lawyers while supporters condemn the settlement as unprincipled.
The Australian Minister for External Affairs announced two postings. R A Peachey is named first Australian Ambassador to Korea and H D Anderson Ambassador to Vietnam, with both to commence duties in February. Peachey has a long External Affairs career and UN experience. Anderson is a senior official currently at the Imperial Defence College.
Miners at Catavi free 19 hostages as part of a plan to end the standoff over two jailed union leaders. Vice President Lechin offered to resign to aid pacification, with a three stage process including an intermediary, troop withdrawal, and guarantees of fair trials for Irenso Pimeni and Federica Escobar.
Chou En Lai, honored by President Nasser, lauded Arab support for Palestine and praised Afro Asian solidarity. He praised the UAR as a catalyst for independence and non alignment while pledging China and the United Arab Republic will advance together in world affairs.
Sir Jack Hobbs, former England and Surrey cricketer, remained seriously ill at his Hove home last night, with condition unchanged according to Reuters.
In a five day Central Committee session Khrushchev announced possible reductions in the USSR armed forces and a modest cut in 1964 defense spending. He insisted peaceful coexistence and Soviet strength would be maintained and noted prior demobilisation and spending changes since 1961.
The Minister for Defence Mr Townley, 56, collapsed in his Melbourne office on Friday and was rushed to Mercy Hospital. A government spokesman said he remained serious but had a restful night after a visit by Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies.
