Firefighters survive a close call at Innesowen as rain remains the only relief.
The work on the Cunarder liner Du France costing 26 000 000 may halt after the collapse of funding. The Atlantic campaigns show 24 000 spent outside a state grant of 25 0 0, with a further government grant needed to continue. A new loan of 240 000 is suggested to cover costs.
A serious grass fire broke out near Trelega and Culhero Stations west of Broken Hill, covering an area of about miles square. Firefighters battled for three days before bringing the blaze under control.

New York reports British statesman Winston Churchill struck by automobile on Fifth Avenue while visiting America. He suffered a sprained right shoulder and lacerations to the forehead and arms and was taken to hospital.
An 75 year old Alexander Barry and his wife Mary Barry were attacked in their Paddington home as robbers sought money. Barry fought back before being battered to death. Mrs Barry was seriously wounded and later died in hospital. Police found £11 10 in notes and the home was ransacked. Barry, a former contractor, was reputedly wealthy.
Miss Nellis Crompton, 26, tenant at Wallahra, awoke to a room filled with smoke and a burning bed. She opened a window and threw burning bedding into the street, nearly suffocated before fainting and being carried to safety by neighbors. No fire source is identified.
London dispatch notes a new Japanese cabinet and an imminent gold embargo. Observers cite Japan departing the gold standard and Mellon warning on war debts as shaping Germany's crisis at Basel. Basle reports the expert panel to finish the report before Christmas.

In Wellington New Zealand Elisabeth Grace Donaldson was arrested and charged with murder after Alfred George Don was found fatally wounded in the lawn in front of his Wanganui home. Police found a bread knife near the scene and Don died despite medical aid.
Thieves entered the dairy farm near Bega and stole a trunk containing 750 pounds in cash. The trunk held the dairy farmer Stephen Fitzpatrick's assets. Police are tracing the culprits.
Albert Hollingeworth, 17, drowned in eight feet of Middle Harbour after declaring his plan to swim yesterday. His father tried to deter him but failed, and the boy disappeared as he went to swim. Clothes were found on the bank and the body was recovered this morning.

Arthur Frewton Percy Freeman and Alan Coate faced charges over a false Statement of accounts issued to Lundie Jenkins shareholder in Motor and Cash Order Company Ltd. The solicitor warned of high costs, Detective-Sergeant Tracy found no basis, and the defendants were discharged.
Melbourne report notes Father E Carroll on return from Ireland says it would be some years before the canonisation of Mary McKillop founder of the Sisters of St Joseph. Born in Melbourne, she is to be honoured as a founder of the order.

Police discover the mother and daughter bound with wire and shot, a Pekinese strangled, and a note from a writer to the Mayor claiming they were dying to escape poverty. The attempt to burn the villa fails.
Sunday report notes a Leningrad factory assembling a Lenin statue to stand in a prominent Moscow position. The monument will reach 370 feet, surpassing the height of Liberty by 48 feet.
