Barton offices renamed Edmund Barton in Canberra move

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet plans to rename the Trade Group building in Barton as the Edmund Barton offices. The shift follows a move from the West Block complex due to fire safety concerns and aims to unify the department under a prestigious name. Total ban on fires in ACT and NSW today

A total ban on lighting fires in the open is imposed in the ACT until at least midnight, covering wood and barbecue use. A similar ban applies across most of NSW including areas near the ACT until at least 9pm today. No residence or other device may be lit or used in the open during the ban.

Interest rates fall across board with big cuts

Economists report yesterday falls in Commonwealth Government bonus rates with reductions up to 0.3 per cent on some stocks. Reserve Bank figures show the weighted average yield for 10.2 per cent October 1996 ads easing 0.1 per cent to 9.7 per cent, continuing a downward slide since September.
