In Adelaide the Prime Minister Mr Gorton hurled insults back at demonstrators outside Bonython Hall at Adelaide University tonight. The confrontation highlighted rising tensions as students protested policy and public figures faced their critics.
Syrian military sources report large formations of Israeli aircraft crossing Damascus airspace to strike airports and military targets. Residents heard explosions as air clashes continued with claims of downed Syrian planes and ongoing combat near the Suez Canal and southern regions.
The ACT Advisory Councillors receive a 33 percent pay rise. Minister interior Mc Nixon convened the reappointed council and announced a small increase aligned with statutory bodies. Seven elected members gain 100 dollars to 400, and the chairman’s pay rises 200 to 800. Mrs Hi Pead previously chaired before resignations last March. The new chairman is expected to preside Monday.
A man, Eric Freeman, 60, of Springvale South, died after a wall collapsed at an Armadale factory during a freak electrical storm. Temperatures surged to 90 degrees as lightning hail and winds up to 100 mph caused damage in southeastern suburbs including Elwood and East St Kilda. Freeman died at Alfred Hospital after the incident.
Melbourne reports indicate airline pilots halted operations at 2 hours earlier than planned leaving hundreds stranded. The Australian Federation of Airline Pilots says the strike, triggered by abrupt airline term withdrawals, aims to force meaningful negotiations, with officials expecting 24 hours or more of disruption.
Ansett Airlines and the federation agreed to a 19 cent rise followed by 3 percent increases over the next two years to avert a strike. Pilots had pushed for 21 percent plus adjustments, while operators offered 17.42 percent plus 4 percent annual boosts. Talks broke down, flights were canceled or rerouted, and hundreds were stranded as major Australian routes faced disruption.
The National Capital Development Commission sets a 2 265 887 dollar contract for Russell 10 at the defence complex. Tender documents expected today for the first two seven storey buildings and service towers. The first building should be in use before Russell 10 is completed.
A domestic flight with 51 aboard was hijacked today and diverted toward North Korea. Government officials likened the act to piracy by Pyongyang and linked it to past North Korean seizures. Two men suspected as hijackers boarded without security checks, one posing as a South Korean Army commander.
