Australia to keep a small force in Vietnam for training
Minister for Defence Fairbairn told Parliament a small Australian Army assistance group, about 180 personnel with 30 instructors, would remain in Vietnam after the main withdrawal. They would train Cambodian and Vietnamese soldiers, be stationed in Phuc Tuy and Wan Kiep, and advise local territorial forces with costs borne by the government. No Australian personnel would be sent to Cambodia, the policy staying firm, though opposition critics warned of risks of escalation.
