Brunei police and British Commonwealth troops are placed on stand by while police leave is cancelled across Brunei Town. The alert coincides with the December 8, 1962 revolt anniversary and follows reports of increased Indonesian attacks on Malaysian states.
United Press International reports a rising shadow war as Indonesian guerrillas push into Malaysian Borneo. British forces face a lengthy conflict with teenage troops aiding defence while patrols suffer heavier losses and villages are abandoned.
Sir Robert Menzies chatted with Royal Commonwealth Society president H C Newman at a Society dinner in the Hotel Canberra. The event celebrated the Queen's bestowal of the Knight of the Thistle honor.
Defence Secretary McNamara said the United States is weighing significant reductions in the defence department and overseas personnel. He cited about 670 million pounds in annual savings for 1965 and planned cuts in foreign staff, military missions, and overseas headquarters. Johnson asked for progress in South Vietnam after Diem's overthrow and to back the Saigon government against the Viet Cong.
Felicity Ann Freeth daughter of the Interior Minister appeared in Perth Police Court on an unlawful possession charge. She was remanded while magistrate Mr T Ansell advised and she changed her plea from guilty to not guilty amid testimony of possible mental strain and isolation. A detective said she admitted taking several small items they alleged were stolen.
Viscount De L Isle was welcomed by a 100-strong Royal NSW guard of honour at St Mark s War Memorial Church in Wollongong. He attended morning service and unveiled the £50,000 steel and concrete church memorial plaque in the vestibule.

Three people died and several were injured in wet weather road crashes on the Southern Tablelands during the weekend. A nine year old girl Rosezana Fisher died on the Federal Highway near Canberra after a car skid on a sharp bend. Her father James George Fisher was hospitalized and his younger daughter Yvonne suffered broken legs. Mrs Gladys Bennett died on the Cooma Road near Colinton and her husband Charles Bennett was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the other car and passengers were later listed in stable condition. A third fatality occurred near Berridale on the Jindabyne Road involving Ivan Mahvic who died after his car overturned. Driver Willie Sabitzer was hospitalized in stable condition. Five people were injured in a head on collision on the Berridale Road near Cooma with Bambi Hardy in serious condition. A man, John Bobegraven, was taken to Canberra hospital with facial lacerations after his car hit a brick wall and a lamp post at Parkes Way.
Rodney Fox of Edwards Town near Adelaide was attacked about 300 yards from shore during the South Australian spear fishing championships. A rescue boat reached him within a minute, and he was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital for a four hour operation. He suffers abdominal and lung injuries and a mauled right hand but was described later as in satisfactory condition. The incident, third in three years, involved a bronze whaler shark in about 15 feet of water.
Longarone town council sues SADE and ENEL for 434 million pounds in damages from the Vaiont Dam collapse on October 9. The case, set for February 26, follows WHOLE disaster that destroyed Longarone and killed over 2000. Private suits are being prepared by additional plaintiffs.
