Voters hear pledges from Labour and National Party contenders as candidates including Fraser and Small present views on Canberra governance. The campaign emphasizes living standards, national capital development, and voter confidence in representation.
The Nation reports Australia will announce the government by 10 p.m. after polls close at 8 p.m. tonight. The Senate outcome may take a week due to proportional representation.
Small margin will decide control of the Senate as votes are counted after primaries. In a close race the Liberal and Country parties lead with 32 seats vs 28 for the Opposition, with 124 House seats and 30 Senate seats contested. Electors total 5,692,076 and polling booths run 8 am to 8 pm. Results expected between 9:30 and 10 pm Canberra telephones will relay progress to tally rooms.

The Country Party leader McEwen warned Australians to expect three years of anxiety, with rural areas most affected. He said the party's aim is to safeguard primary industries and farm goods, stabilize world prices, and ensure food distribution regardless of Britain's EU entry talks.
Prime Minister Menzies urged Labour supporters to consider the party's ability to govern as voters head to polls. He highlighted enthusiasm for Australia’s development and urged cooperation between Commonwealth, states, private enterprise, and foreign capital to raise living standards and growth. He warned that opposition and labour party control could hinder progress and urged a renewed authority to “get on with the job.”
Mr Calwell pins Labour’s plan as the sole answer to Australia’s woes and criticizes the Liberal brace for unemployment. He argues prosperity requires full employment and warns against a policy of using unemployment as a tool. He urges voters to reject the “dangerous and obsolete doctrine” in favor of full employment for growth and security.
Canberra Community Hospital reports the death of Mr. Whitlam father of Deputy Leader Mr. Gough Whitlam. He died after a period of illness, following a spell in hospital. Whitlam interrupted his election campaign to be with his father, then returned to Canberra. He is survived by his daughter Miss Freda Whitfare.
Forecasts in Sydney suggest the Government will face only minor change. Opposition Leader Askin cites last weekend’s Gallup Poll showing the Government should be comfortably reinforced by favorable trade balance and better employment. Premier Hetiron predicts Labour leader Calwell has an excellent chance of victory amid broad public dissatisfaction and Labour patience.
