Parliament oil pollution fines to be increased
The Federal Parliament will introduce a bill in the next session to raise the oil spill penalty from 2000 dollars to 50000 dollars. Shipping and Transport Minister Nixon told the House of Representatives yesterday. Opposition Leader Whitlam remarked that a conference of port and marine ministers decided over ten weeks ago that the 2990 dollar maximum was insufficient.

NSW leaders called liars by Grassby over rural aid delays
NSW ALP figure Bob Grassby accused Federal Minister Nixon and NSW officials of lying about rural reconstruction funds. He cited Nixon's reply on primary industry duties and noted NSW had not spent most of the $40 million emergency wool grower grants, with only $21.4 million used. He argued tensions over funding reflect broader bankrupt threat in the countryside.

Law reform call in support of Mr Enderby
Labor welfare spokesman Hayden backed complete reform of abortion, homosexuality, and prostitution laws as private morality should not determine penal code in advanced nations. James said Australians largely support reform. Both urged a select committee to study abortion and homosexuality law changes and report on a proposed Commonwealth territories criminal code. Enderby sought to suspend landing orders for committee submission, but debate was deferred. Prime Minister McMahon noted the code question had not reached Parliament and saw no bill this Parliament.
