Dam disaster death toll nears 300 as 270 bodies counted by last night in Frejus amid mud and ruins. Rescue workers toil while darkness halts searches. American and French forces join in relief efforts. Government inquiry begun into possible design and material flaws behind the sudden collapse of the 1954 reinforced concrete dam.
Air Force officers rebelled against President Juscelino Kubitschek by seizing several planes including a four engined Panair do Brasil Constellation carrying 38 passengers. One liner was forced to land at a remote northern strip near Aragar, 1200 miles southwest Belem. The government denounced the revolt but kept radio on full alert to curb alarm reports.
Sydney report states Edward Clive 37 of Gladstone Street was sentenced to two years gaol for conspiring in the theft and disposal of a truck owned by Bartholomew High Riley Street. Rooney noted the offender's craft and determination over two and a half months.
Melbourne report: a 17 year old girl from Myrtleford, Marcia Rees, died when a car overturned several times on the Ovens Highway at Gapstead six miles west of Myrtleford. Driver Ronald Shepstone and two passengers suffered injuries and shock. all were taken to Myrtleford Hospital.
Hungary renewed its stance against UN fact finders entering its territory. Karoly Kiss, a Hungarian Socialist Workers Party official, stated that entry for UN officials and Sir Leslie Munro is refused on principle. He said Hungary will welcome non meddling politicians and tourists.
The export of Australian native birds and animals will be prohibited from January 1 next. The decision by the Minister for Customs Senator Henry follows a Commonwealth-State fauna protection conference and centers on centralized control of fauna export traffic. Live koalas platypuses and lyrebirds will not be permitted for any purpose. skeletons skins and plumage may be exported only for scientific use.
The Premier said no debate on the Royal Commissioners' report would occur this session as pending legal action could involve public money. He indicated Parliament would not be convened to discuss the report though members could comment, and stressed action would not be debated this year.
President Eisenhower slept through most of the flight aboard a Boeing 707 on the first leg of a 22,000 mile world tour. He landed in Rome amid a heavy rain as the Italian crowd welcomed him and the Fields Air Force Band played. Security was tight as he prepared to meet Pope John and proceed to Italy, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Persia, Greece, Tunisia, France, Spain, and Morocco for peace mission talks.
In Melbourne Dr C H Dickson of the British Medical Association criticises the federal health minister for withholding anti polio vaccine from private doctors. He says expectant mothers already receive polio injections from their own doctors and private access would boost overall vaccination rates. He notes private doctors have improved protection against tetanus whooping cough and diphtheria.
The U S Tariff Commission will hold hearings on March 22 to decide if lamb and mutton imports from Australia and New Zealand threaten serious injury to the U S meat industry. Domestic interests appealed after claims of rising imports could ruin the sheep sector. The commission also noted possible higher tariffs if imports continue at current levels.
